Michael Jordan started in the 90s with no NBA titles and ended the decade with six championship rings. Entering 1990, Jordan was a bashful superstar who was on top of something great. His Chicago Bulls have become a horror and taking notice from other NBS teams. Off the pitch, Jordan has found success with his sneaker deal with Nike, though things have not always been the same. Back in 1988, Jordan was ready to leave Nike before legendary designer Tinker Hatfield arrived and stayed that date with the Air Jordan 3 prototype. Two years later, Hatfield and Jordan returned for more when they revealed the Air Jordan 5 for the world.
2020 is the 30th anniversary year that sneaker have kicked off a decade. At first, Jordan 5 fans and shoe lovers in general tended to be interested in unique outlandish patterns with shark-tooth shaped midsole. Finally, the Jordan 5 has become a classic shoe with time that everyone know and love. Supported by the different cultural colors in popular culture, some of the color lines are easily recognizable and will endure the test of time. These sneakers have a library of hits but we decided to count down our ten favorite pairs.
10. Air Jordan 5 x Trophy Room “Ice Blue”
In 2019, Jordan’s son Marcus – who also runs the Trophy Room sneaker store – introduced one of the most unique Air Jordan 5 collabs we’ve seen in a while. The shoe is available in a red suede version for friends and family, although the shoe reaches retailers as “Ice Blue”. Light blue suede material makes this a standout shoe immediately when you put it on your feet. As for the midsole, it is white while shark teeth are red. Overall, it’s a nice design that looks great in anyone’s collection. Unfortunately, these are very unlikely so if you want to deal with them you will have to pull out a decent amount of cash.
9. Air Jordan 5 “Doernbecher”
What makes this shoe so great is the incredible story behind it. For the uninitiated, every year Nike associates with Doernbecher Hospital to produce a collection of patient sneakers. This version of the Air Jordan 5 became famous for the way it paid homage to the late Isaac Arzate. It also has his date of birth printed on this shoe tongue while the upper part is covered with words from a poem he wrote just before he died. His baseball and basketball jersey number is placed on the side to honor his memory. Not to mention, these shoes glow in the dark and give off a beautiful blue hue. Overall, there is a sense behind these shoes and they will forever be a classic in the history of Doernbecher collaborations.
8. Air Jordan 5 “Black Grape”
If there were any shoes that showed a need for this uniquely packaged color, it would be AJ5’s “Black Grape” tone. While it may not be as iconic as the white version, the black version is undoubtedly one of the best models in the Jordan 5’s rich history.
7. Air Jordan 5 “Shanghai Shen”
Over the years, there have been various types of Jordan sneakers that pay contributed to MJ’s high school days.
As you can see, the shoe is covered in white leather with blue and yellow hints on the midsole. From there, the icy blue outsole helps create a contrast to the shoe. The green tongue and yellow Jumpman logo also help this sneaker stand out from the rest.
6. Air Jordan 5 “Raging Bull”
What more can you say about a pair of red suede sneakers? The “Raging Bull” color line remains one of the best Jordan 5 colors in Jordan’s expansive library. Not to mention, it’s a pretty rare shoe and you’ll have to dig for a deadstock. Even if red shoes aren’t your thing, you have to appreciate how Jordan Brand takes the shoe to new high-level with this product. We can only hope they retro these things soon.
5. Air Jordan 5 “Bel-Air”
Will Smith deserves a lot of credit when it comes to making the Air Jordan 5 so popular. Smith wore the religious shoe during the first season of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Jumpman is well aware of what Smith is doing and to pay homage to his love of shoes they come up with a color scheme appropriately titled “Bel-Air”. The shoe features a gray suede upper with colorful transparent trim details. For example, the midsole is purple and the outsole has traces of neon yellow. Meanwhile, the sock pad is filled with the aesthetically pleasing ’90s geometric shapes. Some might say this looks like a baby shoe but it is easily the best Jordan 5 out there. According to both the theme and the storytelling sense, this shoe is unlikely to be at the top.
4. Air Jordan 5 “Tokyo”
Part of that explains why the “Tokyo” model is so high on the list because of how rare it is. This sneaker is a bit weird and it’s almost impossible to find it available on resale apps or even your Facebook retail address.
3. Air Jordan 5 “Black/Metallic Silver”
It may not be the most colorful product on this list, but there’s no denying the classic “Black Metallic” color scheme. Thanks to the highlights on this shoe’s black and silver suede, it’s a fashion item that can be worn with any outfit. Not to mention, it’s the perfect neutral color scheme if you need to wear something to your local basketball court and don’t have your own jersey. Every time this shoe goes on sale, the fans get so excited, and that’s all you really need to know.
2. Air Jordan 5 “Fire ”
You can’t list Air Jordan 5’s great color schemes without including at least one Chicago Bulls-inspired template. Of course, we’re talking about the long-awaited “Fire Red” Air Jordan 5 that will return in 2020. In terms of color, it’s pretty basic. The upper part is made of white leather while the midsole is mostly black with red shark teeth. Red also appears on the sock pad and the Jumpman logo on the reed. From there, 3M material is placed on the tongue to make it reflect in specific lighting situations. If you’ve seen Jordan play, the “Fire Red” shoe is what you can remember most about his 5-day Jordan. If there’s ever a “starter” Air Jordan 5, it should be the “Fire Red” or the “Black Metallic” model above.
1. Air Jordan 5 “Grape”
Previously, we discussed Will Smith’s love for Air Jordan 5 and how he made it famous on his sitcom. For those who have seen the show, you may remember that he is mostly seen as the one who stirred the “Grape” color line. While the black suede version is dope, it’s undeniable that the OG model is the pinnacle of the silhouette. Dressed in white leather, purple outsole and reed, and teal accents on the Jumpman logo and shark teeth, the Air Jordan 5 “Grape” is a generous classic. There have been many re-releases of shoes and each time, sneakerheads flock to their local sneaker stores to buy them.
