For 20 years, MJ and Jordan Brand have done what no other brand has done by building a legacy of all the time, inspiring millions of people around the world and giving new meaning to phrase: “Greatness”. MJ, along with his old friend Tinker Hatfield, created the Air Jordan XX to commemorate two decades of his past success.
AJ XX was born in 2005, by the familiar designer Tinker Hatfield taking on the creative role. With his 20th anniversary shoes attached to canvas, Tinker tried to tell the legendary story of Michael Jordan’s life. Once again, MJ’s passion for supercars and speed was incorporated into the design of the AJ XX. There have been many versions inspired by Ferrari, Aston Martin, fighter jets, this time it was Motorsport’s turn. In addition, the design is also influenced by the aggressive Race-boot of the racers when on the track.
The most interesting highlight of this shoe probably comes from the dangling strap on the ankle. The inspiration for this bizarre detail comes from mid top shoes, which support the wearer and reduce weight for shoes similar to a low neck. This design attracts a lot of attention from fans, but on the contrary, many people expressed concern, even choosing to cut it off to use easily, or simply not install this strap too.
Not only on the ankle, the AJ XX also has an additional strap in the midfoot, and this is a detail that helps the number 20 eat points with the user when it has a relatively good lockdown and support ability, making the shoe fixed on leg securely without strapping too tight. More specifically, this strap is also decorated with countless laser motifs, about more than 200 unique symbols covered to help depict the biography of a legend in real life, with images of childhood, the sports career of MJ and a giant Jordan empire with classic AJ shoes.
Not only has a special and stylish appearance, AJ XX also attracts people with a variety of new technologies. The first is the medial side toe pieces (roughly translated as the “protect” part of the toe). This part often appears in motorbike boots to help the wearer be able to hook the gear without feeling pain or injured toes. In basketball, this unit will minimize the impact from the outside to the big toe during the sudden cutting and direction changes. The second highlight is that this is the first Jordan version that almost does not use Air Unit or Zoom Air but uses a completely new cushioning technology called I.P.S. – I.P.S. is basically a system of individual “pods” within the outsole that cushion and support the foot in key areas with different levels of cushioning. And the 2005 model was also one of the last five Jordan models to use lacing.
It can be said that, with the trendy image and modern technology, associated with the 20-year milestone of Jordan’s existence and development, AJ XX is absolutely worthy of being one of the must-have items of Jordan Brand.
